There’s a lot of confusion and fear-mongering around lavender essential oil, especially regarding claims that it's an endocrine disruptor or harmful to men and children. Let’s break this down clearly and factually:
The Claim: Lavender is an Endocrine Disruptor
This concern came from a 2007 case report and some cell-based (in vitro) studies, where three boys reportedly developed prepubertal gynecomastia (breast tissue growth) linked to products containing lavender and tea tree oils. Follow-up in vitro tests showed these oils could weakly mimic estrogen and block androgens (male hormones) in lab conditions.
However, these studies:
Were not done in live human bodies.
Used isolated compounds at concentrations far higher than what’s found in typical personal care products.
Did not account for formulation context, product quality, or other environmental/lifestyle factors.
What the Broader Research Says
The European SCCS (Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety) reviewed the issue and did not ban lavender oil, concluding there’s no strong evidence of endocrine disruption at cosmetic use levels.
No regulatory body (Australia’s TGA, Europe’s REACH, US FDA) currently bans or restricts lavender oil for endocrine concerns.
Lavender has been used safely for centuries in aromatherapy, skincare, and personal care.
Is It Bad for Men or Boys?
No credible evidence shows that normal topical or aromatic use of lavender causes hormonal issues in men or children.
However:
Products with high concentrations of lavender oil (especially undiluted or overused) may potentially have a very mild estrogenic-like activity in sensitive individuals, but this is rare and not clinically proven.
The few case reports (like the 2007 study) are not sufficient to establish causation, and haven’t been reliably replicated or able to be replicated in studies.

Here's how lavender oili behaves in common applications:

Essential Oils, Fragrance Oils, and Why Transparency MattersLately, I’ve noticed the same questions coming up again and again - from candle makers and customers alike:• “Do essential oils contain alcohol?”• “Are fragrance oils just chemicals?”• “If fragrance oils are considered safe, why don’t you use them?”• “What are we actually breathing in when we burn a candle?”Most of this confusion doesn’t come from bad intentions. It comes from terminology, half-explanations, and chemistry language being taken literally.So let’s slow it down and explain it properly, clearly, calmly, and without fear-based language.This article is written for everyone: makers, customers, and anyone who simply wants to understand what’s actually in scented products.How essential oils are actually madeEssential oils are produced using two main methods:• Steam distillation (most plants)• Cold expression (mainly citrus peels)In steam distillation, plant material is exposed to steam. The heat releases aromatic compounds, which travel with the steam and then condense back into liquid. The essential oil naturally separates from the water.No alcohol is added or used in this process.Cold-pressed citrus oils are mechanically expressed from the peel — again, no alcohol involved.The final oil is a complex natural mixture of aromatic plant compounds. Depending on the plant, this can mean anywhere from 50 to over 200 naturally occurring constituents.Where the “essential oils contain alcohol” confusion comes fromThis is one of the most misunderstood points.In organic chemistry, the word alcohol does not mean ethanol, rubbing alcohol, or a solvent.It describes a type of molecule - one that contains a specific functional group (–OH).Some naturally occurring essential oil constituents fall into this chemical category, including: • Linalool• Geraniol• CitronellolThese are aromatic compounds that contribute to scent. Very different meaning.So when someone says:“Essential oils contain alcohol”What they usually mean is:“Some essential oil components are chemically classified as alcohols.”That’s chemistry terminology - not formulation reality.So do essential oils contain alcohol?In the everyday sense?No. Essential oils are not alcohol-based and do not contain added ethanol.In the chemistry sense?Some of their naturally occurring molecules are classified as alcohols by structure.Those are two different conversations.What fragrance oils actually areFragrance oils are formulated scent blends, designed for performance and consistency in products like candles, soaps, and cosmetics.They may include: • Natural aromatic isolates• Synthetic aroma molecules• Or a blend of bothSome fragrance oils use alcohol as a carrier. Many do not.The only way to know is by reviewing the SDS and IFRA documentation for that specific fragrance.Fragrance oils are not automatically unsafe or “bad”. They are simply built differently to essential oils.“If fragrance oils are safe, why don’t you use them?”This is a fair question - and it deserves a clear, honest answer.I don’t avoid fragrance oils because they’re inherently unsafe.I avoid them because I don’t know what’s in them.Fragrance formulas are protected as trade secrets. That means manufacturers are not required to disclose their full ingredient breakdown - even to makers. You’ll receive safety documents and usage guidelines, but not a complete list of every aromatic component.With essential oils, I know: • the plant source• the extraction method• the major constituents• how those constituents behave when heated or applied to skinThat transparency matters to me.I like to understand what we’re breathing in when a candle burns, and what’s going on our skin when we use a product. Not because fragrance oils are “evil” — but because knowledge matters.This is a values-based choice, not a fear-based one.Essential oils vs fragrance oils - the real differenceEssential oils • Plant-derived• Highly complex natural profiles• Can vary with season, climate, and harvest• Often more volatile and harder to stabiliseFragrance oils • Engineered for consistency• Designed to perform well at higher temperatures• Easier to replicate exact scent profiles• Ingredient details protected as proprietaryBoth: • Are volatile organic compounds• Release scent through evaporation• Must be used within safe limits• Require proper testingDo both release VOCs?Yes - and that’s not automatically a problem.VOCs (volatile organic compounds) are what allow us to smell anything at all - eucalyptus leaves, coffee, citrus peel, rain on hot earth.Context matters. “Never burn essential oils — they’re dangerous for pets.”
It sounds alarming, but it’s not backed by chemistry, toxicology, or candle-making experience.The warning didn’t come from veterinarians or environmental scientists, it came from fragments of misread data, recycled marketing claims, and years of online fear that blurred fact with fiction.

Because when you understand the history, it becomes clear that the fear was never about the candle, it was about confusion.
1. How the myth began
A line in a safety sheet
Essential oils are classed as flammable liquids on safety documents.That simply means they can ignite if poured directly on an open flame, not that they become harmful when gently warmed inside wax.Somewhere along the way, that technical note was misread and repeated until it sounded like a warning.
The fragrance-oil marketing push
When synthetic fragrance oils dominated the candle industry in the 2000s, some suppliers wanted to discourage makers from using pure essential oils.They began saying things like “essential oils can’t be burned” or “they’re unsafe in candles.” Those claims weren’t based on research but on marketing, and once repeated online, they began to sound like fact.
The incense confusion
Some of the fear came from air-quality studies on synthetic incense sticks made with charcoal, chemical binders, and artificial fragrance oils.Those industrial products produced dense smoke and measurable particulates, and the studies quite rightly raised concerns about indoor air quality.
When those results began circulating online, they were gradually taken out of context. Instead of focusing on the specific synthetic ingredients that caused the issue, many posts simply repeated the message that “burning scented products releases toxins.” Over time, that generalisation was applied to everything from air fresheners to candles scented with essential oils.
But the studies never tested candles at all - and certainly not natural botanical incense or plant-based essential-oil candles. The research that triggered the panic had nothing to do with clean, well-made products like ours.
The social-media snowball
Once fear-based posts began circulating, they spread faster than facts ever could. “Never burn essential oils” sounded simple and safe, so people shared it without checking where it came from.Soon the statement was repeated in every comment thread about pets, wellness, and candles - even though it had no scientific foundation.
2. What actually happens inside a candle
A candle is a controlled combustion system.The wax is the fuel. The wick draws the melted wax upward. The flame vaporises that wax, and those vapours combine with oxygen to create carbon dioxide, water vapour, light, and heat.
The essential oils are blended within the wax.When warmed, they volatilise - meaning they gently evaporate and disperse into the air as scent molecules.They’re not burned directly and they don’t transform into harmful gases.
When made correctly and used in a ventilated space, an essential-oil candle releases aroma compounds at levels comparable to the natural scent of flowers outdoors - far below anything that could cause irritation or harm.
3. Why essential-oil concentration and wax matter
Essential oils have low flash points (usually between 45 °C and 70 °C).Coconut wax melts in that same range, allowing oils to evaporate slowly instead of burning off.At our standard fragrance load of 4–8 percent, the airborne concentration of essential-oil vapour is tiny - measured in parts per billion.
That’s thousands of times lower than the exposure levels known to cause respiratory irritation in humans or animals.

Our choice of coconut wax isn’t about avoiding danger - it’s about creating the gentlest, most sustainable candle possible.Coconut wax is renewable, biodegradable, water-soluble, and exceptionally neutral in scent, helping our essential oils stay pure and true to the plant.It aligns with our values of sustainability and simplicity - a clean burn that reflects the alpine environment we call home.
5. Understanding essential oils: safe use versus misuse
All essential oils can be unsafe if swallowed or applied undiluted to skin - that’s misuse.In a candle, they exist in tiny, airborne amounts.
Take tea tree oil for example.Swallowing it can cause illness, and using it neat on skin can irritate.But the same oil is safely used in diluted pet shampoos and creams - and in our candles, where it’s bound in wax and released at microscopic levels, it poses no risk.
The same principle applies to eucalyptus, lavender, and citrus oils.Toxicology always comes down to substance, dose, and exposure route - and in candles, all three remain within safe limits.
6. What about pets?
This is where most concern arises - and it deserves clarity.
Stories about pets becoming sick from essential oils almost always involve direct ingestion or overexposure from diffusers running for hours in sealed rooms.A candle is entirely different. The oils are locked in wax and released gradually with heat, not forced into the air as concentrated mist.
Used in a ventilated space, an essential-oil candle does not reach the air concentration required to affect a healthy cat, dog, or small animal.
Simple guidelines keep everyone comfortable:
Burn candles in rooms with airflow.
Allow pets to come and go freely.
Keep candles out of reach of curious noses or tails.
Veterinary toxicologists agree: the issue is dose and exposure time.Our candles stay well below either threshold.
But to clarify no animal should ever be enclosed in a space they cannot leave with any scent of any kind.

Every Alpine Apothecary blend is poured, cured, and observed for steady flame and even melt pool.Independent indoor-air studies show that plant-based candles, burned correctly, release fewer particulates than cooking or using a gas stove.Clean wax, correct wick, and ventilation are the keys - and we build all three into our designs.
8. Why beeswax remains a future possibility
We admire beeswax for its natural glow and scent, but it’s less practical for our alpine off grid workshop.It burns hotter, which can damage delicate oils, and it isn’t water-soluble, which makes cleaning difficult with septic systems.If future blends allow small beeswax additions without those drawbacks, we’ll revisit it. For now coconut wax is our cleanest and best option for our off grid workshop with our natural ecoseptic system.
