However, gel wax is not the same as soy, coconut, paraffin or beeswax. It behaves differently, burns differently, and requires a completely different approach to formulation and testing.
This article isn't intended to tell you not to use gel wax.Many experienced chandlers make beautiful, safe gel candles every day.My goal is simply to explain why gel wax deserves extra care and why understanding the science is so important.
What is gel wax?
Despite its name, gel wax isn't actually a wax.It is a transparent fuel made by combining highly refined mineral oil with a polymer resin. Because it is primarily mineral oil, gel wax forms a predominantly non-polar fuel system.That chemistry is one of the reasons gel behaves differently from traditional candle waxes.
Why does polarity matter?
One of the basic principles of chemistry is that "like dissolves like."Non-polar materials generally dissolve best in other non-polar materials, while more polar substances may have limited compatibility.The important thing to understand is that essential oils and fragrance oils are not single chemicals.They are complex mixtures made up of dozens, and sometimes hundreds, of naturally occurring compounds. Insurance is just as important
One point that is often overlooked is insurance.Some insurers apply additional conditions to gel candles, while others may exclude them altogether.Before manufacturing or selling gel candles, always check that your insurance policy specifically covers them.Never assume that because you're insured for candles, every candle type is automatically included.
My thoughts
I'm not against gel wax.Many talented chandlers make exceptional gel candles safely.What concerns me is when people treat gel wax as though it's simply another version of soy or paraffin.It isn't.Gel wax is a specialised candle fuel that requires an understanding of chemistry, compatibility, burn behaviour and extensive testing.If you choose to work with gel wax, test every formulation thoroughly.
Use materials recommended by the manufacturer.
Confirm your insurance.

What’s true: Burning anything can produce volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
What’s false: That all essential oils are inherently toxic when used in candles. There is no evidence that properly formulated candles using essential oils pose a health risk under normal use.
Confusion with Incense and Smoke
People often confuse burning incense or diffuser smoke, which does combust materials, with the way candles diffuse essential oils via heat only. Essential oils in a candle are heated and volatilised, not burned in the flame itself (unless the candle is made incorrectly or the wick is too hot). This would course exactly the same issue fronfragracne also.
Fragrance Oil Industry Pushback
Some sellers of synthetic fragrance oils have promoted the idea that essential oils are unsafe in candles to defend their products’ superior scent throw, consistency, and cost-effectiveness. These marketing narratives have seeped into DIY communities heavily with many repeating the same narrative and spreading this marketing misinformation sadly.
Lack of Research = Assumption of Danger
Because essential oils are natural and complex, and because there's little industry-standard testing on their use in candles (in fragrance also) , many people default to "better safe than sorry." That’s often spun into "essential oils are dangerous when heated", despite a lack of evidence for this claim in properly made candles.
Reality Check:
Essential oils do break down at high heat, and some (like citrus) may fade quickly.
But this is not the same as producing harmful or toxic fumes at candle-safe temperatures.
Moderation, proper wick sizing, and clean-burning wax are key for both essential oils and fragrance for a safe candle.
Let's stop spreading misinformation.
The rumour started from a mix of overcautious advice, confusion with combustion, and competitive marketing and has been widely spread by DIY groups. There’s no actual credible evidence as of this date that essential oils are toxic in well-made candles.

Cleaning instructions
Method 1: Freezer (recommended)
Stop burning your original candle when there is about 1cm of wax left. If you burn it further, you may damage the candle container.
Make sure the candle is at room temperature. If you freeze a recently lit candle, the glass may crack.
Put the candle in the freezer and wait at about 1-2 hours no longer.
Loosen the wax with a blunt knife (such as a butter knife) and pry it from the bottom of the container.
Clean the container with soap and water (if necessary).
Method 2: Hot water (also works!)
Stop burning your original candle when there is about 1cm of wax left. If you burn it further, you may damage the container.
Pour hot water into the container, leaving some space at the top.
Wait at least 5 minutes.
Most of the wax will float to the top. Remove it and empty the container.
Try to remove any remaining wax from the bottom of the container with warm soapy water; if necessary, repeat the process.
Clean the container with soap and water a final time so it is clean of any residue.
Using the refill
Most people don't realise that there is a right way to burn a candle and most people have no idea what that is.Follow these guidelines and you'll get way more out of your candles every time with no wasted wax (or scent).1. Trim the wick. Every. Single. Time. Each time you want to burn your candle, start by trimming the wick to between 1/8 and 1/4 inches long. You can use scissors, nail clippers (that's my personal favorite), or our wick trimmer (coming soon) but no matter what you do, always trim, every single time. Why every time? Trimmed wicks will give you a cleaner, brighter burn. Untrimmed wicks are a lot more likely to take on a strange shape that dulls and obscures the flame. Also excessively long wicks cause nasty smoky stains that end up on your glass jar candles - not a problem with our tin candles however trimming the wick keeps the flame in control.2. Let the wax melt all the way across.Once your candle's lit, DON'T blow it out until the top layer of wax has melted all the way across. This might take several hours so don't set out to burn a candle at all unless you've got the time to do so. This is also called candle memory. Whenever you fail to achieve full melt, you're contributing to a process called tunnelling. The wick starts to sink lower and lower, like a tunnel is forming right through the center of the candle. Eventually, the tunnel will grow so deep that it'll be tough to light the wick at all. More importantly, all that unmelted wax on the sides represents hours of lovely fragrance and burn time you bought but won't ever get to utilize. It takes patience, but if you melt the wax all the way across every time you burn, the surface of the candle will stay flat and the sides of the tin (or jar) will stay clean, all the way down until the candle is spent. 3. Only burn your candle for 4 hours at a time. If you burn your candle for more than 4 hours at a time, carbon will collect on the wick, and your wick will begin to "mushroom." This can cause the wick to become unstable, the flame to get too large, your candle to smoke, and soot to be released into the air and around your candle container. 4. Buy multi-wick candles.At INSTINKS we have changed all our candles to multi wicks. If your like me, it's hard to find enough time for a proper burn. The solution? Buy a candle with two or more wicks. More flames means more heat which leads to a quicker melt.It also throws more scent.Be wary of extra-wide candles that only have one wick. If the candle surface has just one wick and a diameter of more than 5-6cm, don't buy it. One wick will never produce enough heat to melt it all the way across, especially within 4 hours..5. Keep the flame away from moving air.Do your best to keep your burning candle away from open windows, fans, air conditioners or heavily trafficked areas where people walk back and forth a lot. Moving air can disturb the flame, which can also stain the tin or jar, and can give you tunneling and other issues.6. Dip your wicks to extinguish the flame.This is probably one of the most important steps that people miss.Youve probably noticed that when you blow out a candle, it smokes sometimes a lot. Thats because the core of the wick continues to burn for a short time, the inside of the wick can turn to carbon (ash), making it brittle and the candle hard to light the next time.Then theres the smell. After allowing a fragrant candle to burn, why wipe out all that beautiful scent with the smell of smoke? It can be dangerous, you could accidentally blow some of the melted wax right off of the candle.How do you dip a wick? Essential Oils, Fragrance Oils, and Why Transparency MattersLately, I’ve noticed the same questions coming up again and again - from candle makers and customers alike:• “Do essential oils contain alcohol?”• “Are fragrance oils just chemicals?”• “If fragrance oils are considered safe, why don’t you use them?”• “What are we actually breathing in when we burn a candle?”Most of this confusion doesn’t come from bad intentions. It comes from terminology, half-explanations, and chemistry language being taken literally.So let’s slow it down and explain it properly, clearly, calmly, and without fear-based language.This article is written for everyone: makers, customers, and anyone who simply wants to understand what’s actually in scented products.How essential oils are actually madeEssential oils are produced using two main methods:• Steam distillation (most plants)• Cold expression (mainly citrus peels)In steam distillation, plant material is exposed to steam. The heat releases aromatic compounds, which travel with the steam and then condense back into liquid. The essential oil naturally separates from the water.No alcohol is added or used in this process.Cold-pressed citrus oils are mechanically expressed from the peel — again, no alcohol involved.The final oil is a complex natural mixture of aromatic plant compounds. Depending on the plant, this can mean anywhere from 50 to over 200 naturally occurring constituents.Where the “essential oils contain alcohol” confusion comes fromThis is one of the most misunderstood points.In organic chemistry, the word alcohol does not mean ethanol, rubbing alcohol, or a solvent.It describes a type of molecule - one that contains a specific functional group (–OH).Some naturally occurring essential oil constituents fall into this chemical category, including: • Linalool• Geraniol• CitronellolThese are aromatic compounds that contribute to scent. They are not ethanol, not added alcohol, and not an alcohol base.This is the same reason we have: • fatty alcohols in skincare• sugar alcohols in foodSame word. Very different meaning.So when someone says:“Essential oils contain alcohol”What they usually mean is:“Some essential oil components are chemically classified as alcohols.”That’s chemistry terminology - not formulation reality.So do essential oils contain alcohol?In the everyday sense?No. Essential oils are not alcohol-based and do not contain added ethanol.In the chemistry sense?Some of their naturally occurring molecules are classified as alcohols by structure.Those are two different conversations.What fragrance oils actually areFragrance oils are formulated scent blends, designed for performance and consistency in products like candles, soaps, and cosmetics.They may include: • Natural aromatic isolates• Synthetic aroma molecules• Or a blend of bothSome fragrance oils use alcohol as a carrier. Many do not.The only way to know is by reviewing the SDS and IFRA documentation for that specific fragrance.Fragrance oils are not automatically unsafe or “bad”. They are simply built differently to essential oils.“If fragrance oils are safe, why don’t you use them?”This is a fair question - and it deserves a clear, honest answer.I don’t avoid fragrance oils because they’re inherently unsafe.I avoid them because I don’t know what’s in them.Fragrance formulas are protected as trade secrets. That means manufacturers are not required to disclose their full ingredient breakdown - even to makers. You’ll receive safety documents and usage guidelines, but not a complete list of every aromatic component.With essential oils, I know: • the plant source• the extraction method• the major constituents• how those constituents behave when heated or applied to skinThat transparency matters to me.I like to understand what we’re breathing in when a candle burns, and what’s going on our skin when we use a product. Not because fragrance oils are “evil” — but because knowledge matters.This is a values-based choice, not a fear-based one.Essential oils vs fragrance oils - the real differenceEssential oils • Plant-derived• Highly complex natural profiles• Can vary with season, climate, and harvest• Often more volatile and harder to stabiliseFragrance oils • Engineered for consistency• Designed to perform well at higher temperatures• Easier to replicate exact scent profiles• Ingredient details protected as proprietaryBoth: • Are volatile organic compounds• Release scent through evaporation• Must be used within safe limits• Require proper testingDo both release VOCs?Yes - and that’s not automatically a problem.VOCs (volatile organic compounds) are what allow us to smell anything at all - eucalyptus leaves, coffee, citrus peel, rain on hot earth.Context matters. Ventilation matters.Candle safety is not “natural vs synthetic”This is one of the biggest myths.Candle safety depends on: • Wick size• Container size• Fragrance load• Wax type• Proper burn testingNot whether a scent is natural or synthetic.A poorly wicked candle is unsafe regardless of what it’s scented with.Why understanding this helps everyoneFor makers: • Better formulation decisions• Clearer customer education• Less fear-based adviceFor customers: • Informed choices• Transparency• Confidence in what they’re buyingUnderstanding doesn’t force anyone to choose one option over another — it simply gives clarity.Final thoughtsWhen you hear:“Essential oils contain alcohol”That’s chemistry language being misunderstood.When you hear:“Fragrance oils are all chemicals”Remember that essential oils are chemicals too — just naturally occurring ones.And when you wonder why some makers choose essential oils only, it’s often not about fear or judgment - it’s about transparency, understanding, and personal values.That’s the choice I’ve made, and I believe people deserve clear information so they can make their own.
Adding dye to a candle can affect its burn in several ways:
1. Burn Rate – Some dyes can slightly alter the way the wax melts and burns. If too much dye is used, it can clog the wick, leading to a weaker or inconsistent flame.
2. Soot Production – Certain dyes, especially those that contain heavy pigments or are oil-based, may contribute to more soot formation. This happens because the incomplete combustion of the dye particles can lead to black smoke.
3. Wick Clogging – If a high concentration of dye is added, it may interfere with the wick’s ability to draw wax, causing issues like a small flame, tunneling, or even the candle going out.
4. Heat Resistance – Some dyes (especially powder or pigment-based ones) can increase the melting point of the wax, making it take longer to melt and burn.
5. Fragrance Interaction – If a candle contains both dye and fragrance, there could be chemical interactions that affect scent throw or how well the candle burns.
6. Color Stability – Some dyes may fade or change over time due to heat exposure, UV light, or the type of wax used.
If you’re making dyed candles, using liquid or dye chips specifically designed for candles is best, as they are formulated to minimise negative effects on burning performance.
For makers and testers only (not customers)
Let’s clear this up properly because “cure your candles for 2 weeks” gets thrown around like a universal law.It isn’t.Curing is a maker/testing concept. It’s about when you should judge performance. It is not something a customer should ever need to think about. A candle sold should be ready to burn as sold.
1) What curing actually is (in plain terms)When you pour a candle, two things are happening as it cools and sets:A. Wax structure is formingWaxes don’t just go from liquid to solid and stop. Many continue to reorganise internally over time. That internal structure affects:how the melt pool formshow heat travels through the candlehow fragrance releases during a burnhow stable the surface stays (frosting, wet spots, sweating, etc.)B. Fragrance is distributing and “locking in”Fragrance needs time to fully settle through the wax matrix. This doesn’t mean fragrance becomes “stronger”, it means:it becomes more consistenthot throw becomes more reliableyou get fewer weird early-test resultsSo curing is basically:“Wait until the wax has finished doing what it’s going to do, then test.”2) Why the internet is obsessed with cure timeBecause a lot of candle advice comes from soy.Soy is slow to stabilise, so cure time became the default rule in candle groups. Then it got applied to every wax like it’s the same product.It’s not.3) Different waxes cure differentlySoy wax (most cure-sensitive)Soy continues to change after it’s set. That’s why soy candles often:improve hot throw after a week or twobehave differently at day 2 vs day 12show surface changes over timeMaker guidance:minimum: 5–7 days before judging throwbetter: 10–14 days for final decisionsespecially important for: high load, tricky fragrances, cooler climates, large jarsSoy-heavy blendsIf soy is a big part of the blend, you’ll still see soy behaviour.Maker guidance: 5–10 days is often a good test window.Coconut wax (usually low cure need)High coconut blends tend to perform closer to “ready” once set. If it repeats, it’s real.This prevents one-off “good burns” fooling you.9) Keep customers out of thisThis is the part I want every maker to absorb:Customers should not be taught to cure their candle.If a candle needs weeks before it’s “good,” that is not a customer instruction. That is a production/testing issue.A finished product should be ready when it’s sold.10) What I do (simple, real-world approach)For coconut wax: I’m comfortable learning a lot at 48–72 hours.For soy: I don’t judge throw, until at least a week, usually closer to two.If results change a lot after curing, I take that as information about the wax, not a mystery.
